Factors and Techniques of Increasing Garment Production

Production & productivity in apparel industry:
Production is concerned with the activity of producing goods or services. Productivity is concerned with the effective utilization of resources (inputs) to produce goods or services. Every apparel manufacturing industry wants to higher productivity. Because higher productivity brings higher profit margin in apparel business. Garment industry is a labour oriented. So production depends on labour efficiency. There are some factors to improve productivity in apparel industry. So for increasing productivity in garments industry have to follow techniques. In this article I will discuss about key factors and techniques to improve production in garment industry.

How productivity can be increased in garment industry:
R&D and IE departments in apparel industry always try to how to increase production. From my experience I think following ways can be increased productivity in garment industry:

  1. Increasing the production (output) without increasing the inputs.
  2. Keeping the production same but decreasing the inputs.
  3. Reducing the wastage and rejection rate.
  4. Increasing the rate of output compared to the rate of input.
  5. Establishing reasonable goals for improvements.
  6. Applying automation and using modern technology.
Factors influencing productivity in garment industry:
Productivity is influenced by the following two categories of factors:

A. Controllable or internal factors:
  1. Type of product
  2. Plant and equipment
  3. Material and energy
  4. Human
  5. Technology and automation
  6. Work method
  7. Management policy
  8. Financial factors
B. Non-controllable or external factors:
  1. Structural adjustment
  2. Availability of resources
  3. Socio-economic factors
  4. Political factors (Govt. policy)
  5. Infrastructure
Benefits of higher productivity in garment production:
Some of the benefits that accrue from higher productivity are given below:

  • Higher productivity means higher profit. This can be understand easily by the following relation:
    Profit = Revenue – Cost of goods or services
  • Higher productivity of a garment industry is translated into higher real earnings for its employees.
  • Public realizes more social benefits because of increased public revenues.
  • Customer has to pay relatively low prices because the cost of manufacture is reduced through higher productivity.
