Fabric Seam Strength Analysis

What is seam:
Seam is a term which refers to the stitching line where two or more layer of fabric or leather are joined together. It is the basic building block to make garments. Seam is used for both functional and decorative purposes. Seams should be as flat as possible and unseen except those that are used for decorative purposes for garment design and line.

Seam properties imply to strength, elasticity, security, durability, comfort etc. Seam strength should be same or little bit more of fabric strength.

Purposes of seam strength test:
  1. To know about seam strength.
  2. To analysis the fabric seam strength.
  3. To know about the seam fault.
Factors of seam strength analysis:
Factors to be considered in case of seam strength analysis are described below:

Thread strength:
Thread strength is a major factor in case of determining seam strength. Polyester has more strength than cotton and nylon thread.

Types of thread:
Mono-filament, multi-filament, textured core-spun threads are used. Core-spun thread is the best and have more strength than any other thread.

Stitch density:
Stitch density is directly proportional to seam strength.

Stitch type:
Stitch type 300; lock stitch is more secure than stitch type 100 but in the same time, stitch type 400; multi-thread chain stitch is the most secure and has more strength.

Type of fabric:
We carried our experiment on cotton (denim) and polyester (t-shirt) of them polyester made t-shirt had more seam strength.

Fabric construction:
Warp faced twill in denim fabric and plain construction in t-shirt was found.

Seam type:
Super imposed seam was used in denim trousers and t-shirt specimen.

Thread size and type:
20/2 is used for t-shirt and 50/2 count sewing thread is used in sewing of denim pant.

Conclusion:
This practical gave us the way to know how to analysis seam strength. That may be helpful in our professional life.
